Within the paper industry, health and environmental concerns are associated with the use of chlorine, which is used as a bleaching agent to whiten pulp.

Fortunately, nowadays, such processes are less common and companies such as The Navigator Company use chlorine-free processes to reach desired whiteness levels.

At The Navigator Company, for instance, we use an Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF) process, which uses chlorine dioxide as a bleaching agent in the bleaching process. ECF has BAT (Best Available Technique) status, which means it’s a state-of-the-art process that meets the best results regarding environmental regulations. It is also known to deliver higher quality paper which, in the end, allows The Navigator Company to consume less energy and less wood, while obtaining a more recyclable product than other processes due to the higher quality of the fibers.
